Lowen "A Crypt in the Stars" LP

Lowen is a London based Middle Eastern progressive doom band comprised of Nina Saeidi on vocals, daf, santoor and more, as well as Shem Lucas on guitar and bass, alongside Cal Constantine on drums.

The band mainly focuses on the displaced identity of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Nina Saeidi, who lives in permanent exile from Iran. A country where playing metal is illegal and women singing unaccompanied risk execution.

The ancient world, its art and languages, form a backdrop for an exploration of the pain and longing of the diasporically dispossessed in her mournful wails and use of traditional tahrir vocals unique to Iran.

Their debut album A Crypt In The Stars was released in 2018, with their second full length Do Not Go To War With The Demons Of Mazandaran being released in October 2024 through Church Road Records. This is the first re-press since the album sold out in 2018. This album is moodier and more expansive than their most recent progressive romp. You can hear in it the seeds of what became the modern Lowen in its raw and most simple form.
