However, after finishing the Odd Love recording sessions, it became clear that we had evolved, creating music that was much more energetic, positive and combative. Whether this happened consciously or not is hard to tell.. But listening to the whole recorded material, it felt clear that those two songs were way too negative and dark to fit with the rest. They reminded us of an old version of Coilguns, like when you look at old photos of yourself and wonder how you could have bared such a weird haircut. Nevertheless, we loved them for what they are and decided to put them aside for a while. Looking at how the world has changed since then, it seems we made a good move. They feel much more seasonal at the moment." — Louis Jucker
'Nightshifter' and 'Homeworking Patriarch' were recorded during the same sessions as Odd Love. Deemed too violent and dark to fit with the rest of the album, they were set aside until the band eventually decided to release them as a two-track EP entitled 'Lost Love', highlighting the fact that they stem from the same material but lack the same optimism, to say the least.
While Odd Love was mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineers Tom Dalgety and Robin Schmidt to ensure it shone in the most radio-friendly way possible, Coilguns asked American producer Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City, Thrice, Ghoul) to take charge of these two tracks. Evans had already been responsible for tracking the record and his "Sad dude core" expertise was deemed the perfect fit for these angst-drenched songs.
These two lost poems showcase Coilguns at their saddest. Faintly suspended amidst ominous clouds, they aim to depict our relationship with belonging. They lament the pain of returning alone to an empty flat after pointless tours and question the sanity of working from home during lockdown in a patriarchal society where family tensions have reached boiling point.
