The trials and tribulations in our personal lives and as a band, combined with simply trying to navigate the insanity of our society, with the stress, anxiety, and isolation that come with it can be excruciating. Add to that the existential confusion and sorrow of the climate crisis and the sixth mass extinction. It is enough to cause you to completely lose your mind if you can’t find release or catharsis. This strange emotionally charged music has always been our method of trying to survive this and this is what we've always been singing about. When you have spent a lifetime engaged with these energies and utilizing this form of expression to purge and purify, it feels detrimental to our well being to let it sit idle and neglected. Aaron Turner (Sumac, Isis) joins the band on vocals and guitar, a name whose legacy is intertwined with the band’s own and a true kindred spirit.

“He came straight out of the gate contributing, writing and presenting ideas,” says the band. “His energy matches ours perfectly. It’s as if he was always meant to be there.” Aaron adds, “From the moment I first heard Neurosis over 30 years ago, I felt this was the music my heart and mind had been seeking but not yet heard. Now after many years travelling along various musical paths of my own, the singular sound and spirit embodied by Neurosis continues to speak to the depths of my being. It is an honor and a true pleasure to have been welcomed so warmly into a band that not only shaped my perspective on the limitless possibilities of music - but has lived and exemplified the necessity of upholding creative integrity and camaraderie above all else.”

“We’ve forgotten how to struggle, so we suffer”

Neurosis have never been afraid of change, and here they embrace endless regeneration, surrendering to the emotional exorcism through heaviness and distortion that their music incites. Just as the universe tends towards balance, Neurosis’cacophony of noise, rhythm and dissonance always resolves towards moments of beauty. The addition of Turner's powerful vocals and wildly creative and unhinged approach to guitar proves to be a vital force as Neurosis find themselves again at the mercy of evolution and expression.

“We’ve forgotten we are wild, so we suffer”

On every song in the band’s history, Neurosis shifts restlessly between tension and relief, invoking a feeling both feral and transcendent in listeners. The weekend took on a healing, cathartic ceremonial nature that is difficult to put into words. And if we find ourselves defined by these connections, what are we left with when they inevitably come to an end? This is arguably the central question of “Bridge Over Cumberland”, which marks a bold step forward for Mad Honey, as the Oklahoma City band’s second full-length release on Deathwish Inc. and Sunday Drive Records is confident, assured, and undoubtedly their most complete work to date.

Debuting in 2018, Mad Honey quickly became one of the buzziest acts in the prolific OKC shoegaze scene, with lead vocalist Tuff Sutcliffe’s poignant lyricism serving as an enigmatic centerpiece. For this album, the band’s most collaborative effort yet, the production allows Sutcliffe’s shadowy presence to stand tall against a backdrop of billowing guitars. The eleven tracks unfold as a series of snapshots tracing the silhouettes of heartaches both platonic and romantic, both quotidian and cosmic. The intrinsic tension of codependency is explored in the couplet of “Somehow” and “Past Together Isn’t Presence”, as the former opens with Sutcliffe sardonically lamenting “the way that I miss him, I should be put down” while in the latter, the other party is the one who is pining. Anyone who has dealt with the ending stages of a fading friendship or a moribund romance will find something to relate to here, whether it’s the curse of inauspicious timing and the ground that the connection was built on seemingly shifting underneath your feet in the propulsive “James Gets His Rose” or “Moshfeghian” examining the question of whether it’s possible for anyone to win in these situations against the backdrop of a dooming, droning guitar riff.

From the opening track “I Am a Wall, I Am a House”, there’s a recurring motif of exploring our connections through the structures we inhabit. These structures often stand tall across multiple generations, persisting well beyond the fleeting lives of the people who have built and occupied them. How many breakups have the walls of our houses seen over the years? How many failed talking stages have left people curled up on the floors of their apartments? How long does a trace of a former friend’s presence linger in the fabric of your curtains after they’ve left your place for the last time? Do these structures judge us on how long we take to pick up the pieces of our lives and find ourselves once again in the aftermath of losing someone who served as a prism through which we viewed the world and our place in it?

This all culminates in the towering title track to close out the album, which surely stands as Mad Honey’s most notable achievement thus far. In it, we survey the waning embers of a fire which once burned bright. The bed is greening over. Sutcliffe is burning every bridge, but keeping the ordinary, pedestrian moments which ultimately define our lives. She’s pondering whether her dreams lie in the Tennessee hills where she grew up, rather than the Oklahoma plains where she currently resides. By the time a gentle piano denouement carries us to the conclusion of the song cycle, we’re left with the sense that in spite of Sutcliffe so often finding herself unmoored and dealing with all of the ways in which deep feelings seemingly define us and threaten to destroy us when an important interpersonal dynamic comes to its inescapable conclusion, there’s ultimately a quiet conviction that all of this emotional pain can eventually result in hard-won growth. “Bridge Over Cumberland” therefore suggests that if you define yourself by these connections, what you are left with when they come to their inevitable end is a crossroads, both a risk of self-destruction and an opportunity for reinvention. And once you hear it, you can’t unhear it. A low, persistent noise throbbing in the background. Scientists say it registers between 30 and 40 hertz. It’s been heard in Ipswich, Massachusetts; Auckland, New Zealand; and Windsor, Ontario. It has haunted the population of Taos, New Mexico, for decades. It’s been linked to suicides in the UK. Not everyone can hear it. No one knows where it’s coming from. I read on the phenomona while researching my own tinnitus. Then an idea struck. “What if the Hum is the culmination of all the pain in the world, creating an audible signal across the universe?” vocalist and lyricist Jacob Bannon posits. “Something noticeable to others operating on a similar emotional plane.”

Hum of Hurt follows Love Is Not Enough as Converge’s second full-length release of 2026. Like its predecessor, the album offers a bleak yet empathetic assessment of the human condition and its ongoing deterioration. With this album, the songs are more raw and exposed. “When we came together to write, we ended up with a wealth of material,” Bannon says. “As work progressed we realized we had created two separate albums, and treated them as such.”

Hum of Hurt is distinct from Love Is Not Enough, but just as volatile and potent. “It’s not a sequel,” Bannon explains. “The unifying musical idea early on was, ‘Let’s make a noise rock album.’ But we never really did. The first one wasn’t. This one touches on that spirit, but it’s much more dynamic than that descriptor. To me, it leans more into being an emotional hardcore album, while Love Is Not Enough feels more metal leaning album. You can practically hear Bannon’s throat tearing apart in every scream. “It’s dark and pointed right at you,” he says. “Lyrically, I’m exploring how my own middle-aged introspection doesn’t always bring a brighter light. I see my own trappings reflected in those around me. Here I am imploring them to slip the noose to see another day.”

“Dream Debris” is a gripping, doomy epic born from a single bass note that builds to a booming crescendo. “It has a lot of twists and turns, yet starts off incredibly simple. The slow build was driven by Nate’s vision and bass tone,” Bannon says. “We kept asking ourselves ‘Does it need anything else?’ In the end, it didn’t. It was just so heavy, encapsulating everything we wanted in the song.”

The menacing track “Detonator” delivers a powerful line that will linger: There’s nothing to win if there’s no one to lose. “I go on a bit of a rant here,” Bannon says. “The idea is that when passion withers, the broken and beaten often remain in discomfort. The song ends with the line, ‘Don't be blown apart by your mistakes,’ which sums up the stark mentality on this one.”

The title track stands as one of the most propulsive and emotional songs on their career. Thematically, Bannon examines the price of the lives we pursue. “I’ve given 35 years of my life to creating art and music,” he says. “I appreciate the creative home and support this community has given, yet rarely is space left for anything else. These lyrics are me looking in a mirror, recognizing that I am not the man I want to be. I need change, and still have work to do.”

The album also features a new rendition of “I Won’t Let You Go,” originally recorded for the 2020 video game Cyberpunk 2077. “When we recorded the first version, Ben tracked drums in California and we assembled it here,” Bannon explains. “It was good, but we knew we could do better. This version has everything the previous one was missing. It now feels right.”

Hum of Hurt was recorded and mixed by Kurt Ballou at God City in Salem, Massachusetts, with engineering assistance from Zach Weeks. Blending various elements of hardcore punk and extreme metal, including metalcore, screamo, and grindcore, the unit has solidified its place in the underground music scene over the past decade. Whether intentional or simply burning brightly before running out ideas, it's somewhat uncommon for acts to make it past the three year mark. Since their formation in 2016, Milwaukee trio Snag have quietly carved out their own unique space in the DIY underground, quickly becoming a favorite of listeners hungry for emotional hardcore that delivered more than just aimless chaos. On All The Cages Holding Us Will One Day Turn To Dust, the band's third LP and first for Deathwish Inc, Snag continue to develop their brand of heavy emo, expanding melodically and texturally without losing their edge. “Musically, the album is punishing at moments; fast and heavy but also soft and beautiful” says guitarist and vocalist Samm Szymborski. “We wanted to write something that spans all things musically that we are interested in. We wanted to write an album that goes straight to the point and represents Snag as a whole.”

Working with engineer Nick Elert, the album was tracked live over the course of three days in July 2025, adding vocals a month later after experiencing an unexpected power outage at the studio. Compared to the band's prior output, All the Cages is a little more spacious in its production, with Elert introducing a touch of ambiance into the Snag sonic world that’s a welcome addition. The frantic start and stop tempos, the panic-stricken screams and melancholic chord progressions are all still there, but the album displays plenty of growth as well. Throughout its 11 tracks, Snag exhibit the expansion of their sound in both directions-at times more melodic and others more aggressive than their previous releases.

Snag’s lyrical approach has often been more universal, focusing on broader themes like climate anxiety and apocalyptic dread. Many of the lyrics on All the Cages show the band looking inward, drawing on the band members’ personal experiences with chronic illness and mental health obstacles. “After going through some mental health struggles this past year, and being in a relationship with someone who is chronically ill, being part of writing this album has helped me through some of those struggles,” says drummer and vocalist Bryan Wysocki. “The album is an odyssey through all the cages one may be trapped in whether it be physically, mentally, as a product of society or as a product of our own being.” The theme of cages weaves its way throughout the lyrics of the album; on “Unarrest Me”, it’s the physical cage of a jail cell, on “Debilitated”, it’s the cage of one's own body, on “Shelf Life”, it’s the cage of materialism.

From the beginning, acting on the message has always been a part of Snag’s agenda, with the lyrics serving as a suggestion for active involvement. Along with the imperative lyric sheet, their self-titled debut LP also came with a book of matches and an envelope of seeds, encouraging the listener to help grow new habitats for pollinators. For All The Cages, the band once again chose to use the LP format as a means for action, working with the Florida-based organization Wire of Hope to include individually labeled envelopes to inmates as an invitation for listeners to have a prison pen pal.

“The logic that says a corporation can destroy the planet to extract profit from it systematically is the same basic logic that says humans can be systematically caged for profit,” says bassist and vocalist Peter Murphy. “It’s probably safe to say every person who hears this album is a lot closer to being incarcerated than to being one of the billionaires that seek ever more control. We thought we could make that connection much more explicit with a homework assignment in the record insert. And hopefully foster friendship and connection as well.”

The intentionality of the band's lyrical approach extends to the music, as well. Snag has always been far more than a mere throwback, consciously bringing something new to a subgenre that often does little to move beyond the influence of its forebearers.

And hopefully foster friendship and connection as well.”

The intentionality of the band's lyrical approach extends to the music, as well.
